Empat Asteroid Bernama Astronom Indonesia

Asteroid, saat ini lebih dikenal sebagai planet minor, adalah objek tatasurya yang mengorbit matahari yang bukan planet, planet kerdil, atau komet. Populasi terbanyak berada di antara planet Mars dan Jupiter. Namun banyak juga yang mengorbit dekat bumi.

Penamaan ketika pertama kali ditemukan didasarkan pada tahun penemuan diikuti oleh kode huruf (dan bila perlu angka), misalnya 1989 AC dan 2002 LM60. Setelah orbitnya diketahui dengan pasti kemudian dikatalogkan dengan nomor urut di dalam basis data Pusat Planet Minor (Minor Planet Center). Penamaan spesifik kemudian diberikan berdasarkan ketentuan yang diatur oleh IAU (International Astronomical Union). Nama-nama tersebut diusulkan oleh penemunya disertai dengan alasannya. Kemudian Kelompok Kerja Penamaan Benda Kecil Tatasurya (asteorid dan komet) akan membahasnya dan menetapkannya.

November 2010 lalu Kelompok Tugas tersebut mengumumkan 64 nama baru asteroid, 4 di antaranya adalah nama astronom Indonesia, semuanya mantan Kepala Observatorium Bosscha, ITB:

Prof. Dr. Bambang Hidayat

Dr. Moedji Raharto

Dr. Dhani Herdiwijaya

Dr. Taufiq Hidayat.

(12176) Hidayat = 3468 T-3

Discovered 1977 Oct. 16 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels.

Bambang Hidayat (b. 1934) is an active promotor of astronomy in Indonesia. Known for his work on visual binaries and H-emission-line stars, he was director of Bosscha Observatory in Lembang during 1968-1999 and vice-president of the IAU during 1994-2000.

(12177) Raharto = 4074 T-3

Discovered 1977 Oct. 16 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels.

Indonesian astronomer Moedji Raharto (b. 1954) is senior lecturer at the Institut Teknologi Bandung and was director of Bosscha Observatory in Lembang during 2000-2003.  He is an authority on Galactic structure, based on the Hipparcos and IRAS-Point Source catalogues.

Indonesian astronomer and solar physicist Herdiwijaya Dhani (b. 1963) was director of Bosscha Observatory in Lembang during 2004-2005.  He is known for his work on binaries, solar magnetic activity and its influence on weather and climate.

(12179) Taufiq = 5030 T-3

Indonesian astronomer Taufiq Hidayat (b. 1965), associate professor at the Institut Teknology Bandung, was director of Bosscha Observatory in Lembang during 2006-2009.  Known for work on the solar system and extrasolar transits, he actively fights the adverse effects of urbanisation around the observatory.
